The South East London Orthopaedic Rotation is one of the smallest geographical deaneries in the UK, but it offers exceptional access to cutting-edge orthopaedic facilities and highly skilled trainers. Established in 2012, the rotation was previously part of South East Thames before Health Education England reorganised it into South East London and Kent, Surrey & Sussex (KSS).

This dynamic deanery is committed to providing a comprehensive and supportive rotation structure, offering excellent education, research opportunities, and fellowships. Trainees can gain experience across a broad range of orthopaedic sub-specialties, with placements at world-class institutions such as the Paediatric Evelina Children’s Hospital, King’s College London’s Major Trauma Centre, and Guy’s Orthopaedic Elective Centre of Excellence.

We have strong collaborative links with neighbouring deaneries in KSS and South West London, allowing us to offer joint teaching sessions led by internationally renowned trainers. Our educational approach includes symposiums, workshops, and mock vivas tailored to FRCS exam preparation, helping trainees build a solid foundation for success in national exams and in securing their desired consultant roles.

The deanery also offers abundant research opportunities, with several district general hospitals involved in national collaborative projects that contribute to meaningful outcomes, often presented on the international stage. The King’s Orthopaedic Research and Education (K.O.R.E.) Foundation plays a key role, offering national courses with industry-leading simulation designed to challenge trainees at all stages of their career.

For those looking to specialise, Guy’s Hospital provides prestigious fellowships in Hip Arthroplasty, focusing on young adult hip conditions, and Spine Surgery, in association with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. King’s College Hospital offers renowned fellowships in Advanced Trauma and Lower Limb Reconstruction, ensuring trainees are at the forefront of orthopaedic innovation and care.
